Qui sommes-nous ?

Eco-Sud est une ONG environnementale créée par les citoyens de la région de Blue Bay-Mahébourg il y a plus de 20 ans afin de protéger l’environnement et la biodiversité du territoire mauricien pour les générations d’aujourd’hui et de demain.

Notre programme principal Lagon Bleu vise à restaurer et préserver l’intégrité écologique et biologique des régions de Blue Bay et de Pointe d’Esny en collaboration étroite avec la communauté locale.

Nous sommes également au premier plan de discussions et d’actions visant à sensibiliser aux enjeux environnementaux locaux, à offrir des solutions alternatives et à empêcher la réalisation de projets qui menacent l'environnement.

A travers ces diverses activités, Eco-Sud vise à favoriser l'équilibre entre le développement économique, social et la protection de l'environnement.

Contexte actuel

La communauté de Blue Bay-Mahébourg se retrouve aujourd’hui très fragilisée suite à l’épidémie de coronavirus. En effet, les citoyens qui avaient une activité en lien direct avec le tourisme sont fortement touchés.

A la crise économique pourrait s’ajouter une crise alimentaire. On sait que Maurice a un taux d’autosuffisance alimentaire global inferieur à 30% (International Trade Administration, 2019) et, le 18 mars 2020, le ministre de l'Agro-industrie et de la Sécurité alimentaire appelait les Mauriciens à retourner à la terre.

N’oublions pas le changement climatique qui menace aussi sérieusement notre sécurité alimentaire... Il est donc urgent d’augmenter notre résilience à ce niveau !

Que proposons-nous aujourd’hui ?

Le projet Resilient Organic Community (ROC) propose des solutions à la question de la crise économique et de notre autosuffisance alimentaire via :

> Une ferme communautaire qui permettra aux citoyens de la région de participer à la résilience alimentaire. La Ferme Communautaire de St ROC tire son nom du lieu-dit Saint ROC où elle se trouvera, sur un terrain de 2,6 arpents bordé par la Riviere La Chaux à moins de 5km de la Cité Beau-Vallon à Deux Bras. Ce terrain a été mis à la disposition d’Eco-Sud par Stéphane Rouillard.

>  Une plateforme en ligne pour mettre en réseau les acteurs agricoles biologiques mauriciens et les citoyens : Le Réseau Agricole Biologique (RAB). Ce réseau en ligne s’inscrit dans une dynamique citoyenne d’entraide et de partage de connaissances dans les domaines agricole et alimentaire. 

Les autres dimensions du projet :

• Renforcement communautaire à travers des visites guidées de la ferme et des journées portes ouvertes
• Dimension éducative à travers des stages et des partenariats scolaires
• Programme d’échange de travail
• Plateforme de recherche
• Ateliers

Pourquoi soutenir ce projet ?

En soutenant ce projet, vous permettez à la communauté de Blue Bay-Mahébourg de s’investir dans une activité qui lui permettra d’avoir un revenu, d’acquérir de nouvelles compétences et d’avoir accès à des produits frais et biologiques.

Avec la direction « biologique » que va prendre la ferme communautaire et le soutien de Laferm Coco (ferme « agroécologique » www.lafermcoco.mu), le projet ROC aura également de nombreux impacts positifs sur l’environnement.

L’agriculture est donc un levier extraordinaire pour le climat et l’autonomie alimentaire mais aussi pour :

• Une gestion plus qualitative et quantitative de l’eau
• Améliorer la qualité de l’air et des terres
• La préservation de la biodiversité, de la santé
• Une meilleure offre alimentaire (diversification des cultures)
• Une agriculture innovante et plus attractive
• Améliorer la résilience aux extrêmes climatiques
• Lutter contre l'imperméabilisation des terres
• Diminuer la dépendance aux énergies fossiles
• Améliorer l’autonomie des fermes (semences)
• Créer des circuits courts réactifs
• Lutter contre le chômage
• Renforcer le lien social

A quoi serviront vos dons ?

Grâce à vos dons, nous espérons aller plus rapidement vers une viabilité économique.
Dans un premier temps, nous souhaitons :

• Produire des oeufs, des poules, des dindes et canards fermiers et des moutons
• Démarrer le potager de légumes bio
• Planter des arbres fruitiers

Pour cela, il nous faut investir dans :

>< L’aménagement des structures existantes afin de pouvoir stocker les matériaux et abriter un gardien sur place

>< La fabrication d’un lieu pour abriter les animaux de la ferme.

>< Un système pour récupérer l’eau de pluie afin de remplir le puit existant.

>< L’achat des animaux, graines et arbres fruitiers.

>< Un SOIL Test afin de comprendre la particularité du sol, sa teneur en matière organique.

>< Les salaires de deux agriculteurs et d’un gardien pour cinq mois. Ces personnes nous aideront à lancer le projet.

>< La location de transports pour mener à bien les actions nécessaires.

• Pour un don allant jusqu’à RS 1 000 : vous serez informé en premier quant à la possibilité d’acheter les produits de la ferme.
• Pour un don de plus de RS 1 000 : vous aurez, en plus d'être informé en premier quant à la possibilité d’acheter les produits de la ferme, la possibilité de faire un stage d’initiation de trois jours à Laferm Coco (sur arrangement avec Laferm Coco).

Resilient Organic Community, citizen mobilization in favor of food self-sufficiency.

Who are we ?

Eco-Sud is an environmental NGO created by the citizens of Blue Bay-Mahébourg over 20 years ago in order to protect the environment and the biodiversity of Mauritius for the generations of today and tomorrow.

Our main program « Lagon Bleu »  aims to restore and preserve the ecological and biological integrity of the Blue Bay and Pointe d'Esny regions in close collaboration with the local community.

We are also at the forefront of discussions and actions aimed at raising awareness of local environmental issues, offering alternative solutions and preventing projects that threaten the environment.

Through these various activities, Eco-Sud aims to promote a balance between economic, social development and environmental protection.

Current context

Following the coronavirus, citizens who had an activity directly related to tourism are heavily impacted and fragile.

To this economic crisis we are facing, could be added a food crisis. We know that Mauritius has a global food self-sufficiency rate of less than 30% (International Trade Administration, 2019) and, on March 18, 2020, the Minister of Agro-industry and Food Security called on Mauritians to return to Earth.

Let’s not forget climate change that also seriously threatens our food security ... It is therefore urgent to increase our resilience at this level!

What do we offer today?

The Resilient Organic Community (ROC) project offers solutions to the question of the economic crisis and our food self-sufficiency through:

> A community farm that will allow citizens of the region to participate in food resilience. “La Ferme Communautaire de St ROC” takes its name from the place called Saint ROC where it will be located, on 2.6 acres of land bordered by the La Chaux River less than 5km from the Beau-Vallon City in Deux Bras. This land was made available to Eco-Sud by Stéphane Rouillard.

> An online platform for networking Mauritian organic agricultural stakeholders and citizens: The Organic Agricultural Network (OAN). This online network is part of a citizen-based dynamic of mutual aid and knowledge sharing in the agricultural and food fields.

The other dimensions of the project:

• Community building through guided tours of the farm and open days
• Educational dimension through internships and school partnerships
• Work exchange program
• Research platform
• Workshops

By supporting this project, you will allow the community of Blue Bay-Mahébourg to invest in an activity that will allow them to have an income acquire new skills and have access to fresh and organic products.

With the "organic" direction that the community farm will take and the support of Laferm Coco (agro-ecological farm www.lafermcoco.mu), the ROC project will also have many positive impacts on the environment.

• Produce eggs, hens, turkeys and farm ducks and sheep
• Start the organic vegetable garden
• Plant fruit trees
